April has been busy!

At the beginning of April, I was invited to be a content creator for a site called Buttrcup. Buttrcup is owned by the same group of amazing people over at Findrow.  Please be aware before clicking on the links.  Buttrcup is NSFW; and Findrow apps contain a little more graphic work.  Some may have already noticed that I have made some pretty big changes to the site over the past couple of weeks.  You can now find more of my uncensored work over at Pieces of You.  Don’t worry, I will continue to write blog posts about new shoots and sharing some of my favorites images from them on here.

At the same time this was happening, I was also working on launching the Shop page!  This is something I have always wanted to do with the work I have been creating.  Right now there are only two designs/graphics available in a couple different options.  My plan is to update this page with limited run, print to order products.  Some of these limited run products will include shirts, journals, stickers, prints and posters.  Honestly, the sky is the limit and I may start making some super random stuff for you guys.  You can view a couple of the available products after the jump.

Nomophobia

nomophobia : fear of being without access to a working cell phone

As I go through my archive of images this afternoon, I have noticed how many frames I have shot where the people I am working with are on their phones.  Sending a text message.  Creating a story for Snapchat and Instagram.  A quick behind the scenes shot from our shoot.  Checking what everyone else is doing.  Judging people based off what they choose to share with the world.  Keeping up with the local gossip.

Our phones now allow us to be constantly connected with the entire world.  So we can see what everyone else is doing.  And they can see what we are doing.  We feel like we are connected to them.  We know what their lives are like.  The reality is we are less connected than we have ever been before.  We text with reckless abandon and respond if and when we want to.  We rarely pick up the phone and have a conversation.  Dinners are spent with the entire table taking photos of their food and scrolling through Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.  We are living our entire lives scrolling endlessly paying attention to what everyone else is doing…and not actually living our own lives…

Every artist creates with open eyes what they see in their dream.

So one night after the girls were in bed and I was wasting time on the rowing machine, I get a message on Facebook.  I glance over and didn’t immediately recognize the tiny face in the bubble.  Long story short, it was a message from Maggie Judge telling me she was going to be in town soon and wanted to see if I was interested to shoot.  Due to some possibly scheduling problems on my side, I told her I would keep her in the loop and apologized that I wasn’t able to give her a solid yes but that I ABSOLUTELY wanted to photograph her.  We managed to squeeze in a little over an hour of shooting around the Lone Star Court where she was staying.  Maggie is this amazing ball of energy that never seems to stop smiling, especially with those amazing eyes of hers.

We were working under some pretty low light conditions and I was running around with my digital and film bodies.  Some of these images are admittedly soft and I missed the focus on some of them.  Regardless, I still feel like the images we made together are outstanding and I wanted to show them off!

Also, I stole a caption from one of Maggie’s Instagram post for the name of this blog post. She has a way with words and communication; and I am trying to convince her to start a website to showcase her work and creativity.  Keep your fingers crossed!

More images after the jump.

Winter Is Dead…

Golden hour during the fall and winter produces some of the most beautiful light I have ever witnessed.  It is hard to not get lost in watching the way the light licks over the trees, leaves, grasses and rocks.  Wait for it…

Good Grief

“They say there’s good grief
But how can you tell it from the bad?
Maybe it’s only in the fact
Good grief’s the one that’s in your past”

clinomania

I haven’t shot anything in over 4 months.  Well, that is not 100% true.  I have half a roll of Ilford HP5+ that I have taken of my daughters until the batteries finally died on my film body.  And with the impending “snow-pocalypse” about to hit Austin tonight, I just started a fire while dinner is cooking in the oven.  I plugged in an old drive that I use when I am shooting on location away from home.  I immediately went to this set that I shot a long time ago that I haven’t really done anything with.

After I processed the images, I sat here trying to figure out a theme or feel for the images to title this post.  I came across the word “clinomania” and it was almost like an immediate gut punch that I needed to dig further through this set for a possible new gallery to add to the Portfolio section of the site.

Images after the jump are NSFW.

End of the Internet as we know it?

Well…there you have it.   The FCC voted 3-2 (along obvious party lines) to repeal the existing Net Neutrality laws in place.  This has some potentially serious impacts on how and what you may/may not be able to view on your phone or at home.

in the meantime, here is something new to look at that I shot semi-recently…

Everything you did has already been done.

The above image is two pages from Austin Kleon’s book, Steal Like An Artist.  If you haven’t read this yet, definitely go grab a copy quick.  Now that I have given credit where credit is due, on to my real point (hopefully).

I have seen too many posts recently from creatives on social media touting how unique or original they are (I think I have been spending way too much time perusing social media…) and somehow it has really gotten under my skin for some god awful reason.  It shouldn’t really bother me since it has no bearing on what I am doing, but it still does; something terrible.

Before I go too much further though… this isn’t a diss to some of my fellow creatives out there.  I have some friends in my community who truly are being “original” and recognize and even throw heavy attention to the other artists that they are inspired by to put their own twist on their work.  I have many friends that have honed their craft and fully own that the have “stolen” a technique, a lighting style or inspiration from another creative, yet still maintain and create solid work that has their unique DNA to it; because they studied what was done before them and learned how to remix that to make something that was their own
